The stainless steel Vipp island in the kitchen, which the couple found in Denmark, is “the best thing in the house,” says Carina. “We moved from a house with a big pantry, and it was a challenge to figure out where everything would go. This island holds a lot.” Here, the family embraces the “European model” of compact living–albeit in 4,500 square feet. Dutton designed the black cabinetry wall as a backdrop for the island, which he calls a “piece of jewelry.”

Like any gallerist worth his salt, Doug spends five minutes each night turning off all of the ambient lighting in the house, like a pair of midcentury Biny sconces in the primary bedroom, an Orocolo lamp in the living room, and a 1970s Marika Carniti Bollea Nautilus lamp in the kitchen. Much of the light shines on a collection of artwork that’s so vast it’s often swapped out.

“We’ve already traded a few things,” says Doug. “If we find something we love, we want to use it. It’s what we do. It’s a perk, for sure.”

As is a home that’s forever. “Our girls want to come here when we’re old with their own kids,” says Carina. “They love it so much.”

The 1950s painting is from Denmark, the 1970s vase is from Sweden, the 1970s stool is Pierre Chapo, and the ceramic is from France. “We spend a lot of time in Denmark and like to mix Danish and Swedish,” says Doug. “We know a lot about that style of furniture.”

Dutton reworked the floor plan in the primary bathroom to set the vanity under a skylight. “We don’t use much overhead lighting,” says Carina.
