SWA creates “toolkit” for a more walkable Houston

Landscape architecture studio SWA has designed a modular system including petal-shaped shade structures, outdoor lighting and planting beds that can be deployed around the city in an effort to create a more comfortable streetscape in Houston, Texas, USA.

The Cool & Connected Corridors project seeks to retrofit the streets of Houston with cooling infrastructure to create a more walkable pedestrian experience.

    Cool & Connected Corridors

The project is part of the city’s wider Public Realm Action Plan initiative aimed at making the urban streetscape “more delightful, comfortable and easy”, according to the city.

The network of architectural elements is designed to be integrated into varying, pre-existing sidewalk conditions, according to the team, and have been installed along a 15-block stretch of the city’s Texas Avenue as Phase 1 of the Public Realm Action Plan roll-out.

    Cool & Connected Corridors

“Cool & Connected Corridors is a blueprint for taking action here and now, showing how cities can layer social, economic, and environmental benefits in a cost-efficient way,” said SWA principal Natalia Beard.

The “easily replicable toolkit” includes three main components – a lighting system aimed at improving visibility and safety at night, modular planting beds and mesh cooling pavilions designed by architecture studio Höweler + Yoon.

The petal-shaped pavilions are made of bead-blasted stainless steel, with mesh membranes in gradients of blue, green and purple.

They stretch up overhead, providing shade on street corners during the day, and integrated lighting illuminates them at night.

According to the team, they were designed to be installed as a single unit, or clustered together to form “bouquets”.

    Cool & Connected Corridors

“Together, they create a sequence of shaded landmarks that help orient pedestrians from block to block,” said Höweler + Yoon co-founder Meejin Yoon.

The integrated lighting designed for the system is globe- and line-form lighting that drops down from the tree canopy.

According to the team, it was informed by a lighting study performed by the city in 2023, which identified a master plan for illuminating the nightime streetscape.

Other elements in the Cool & Connected Corridors system include wayfinding, replacement trees and a careful selection of drought-tolerant and pollinator-supportive plants throughout the planters.

The system along Texas Avenue was installed in the city ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Since its installation, “thermal infrared readings of ground surfaces beneath the shade structures show an average temperature reduction of 10°F (5°C), with reductions of up to 30°F (16°C) in some locations”, said SWA.

Next, the city plans to install the system along the remaining portion of Texas Avenue and along other strips of the downtown area including McKinney Street and Preston Street.

Another recent urbanism project aimed at improving walkability is the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street in London.

Elsewhere in Houston, STG recently released renders of a twisting skyscraper, while the city is also set to receive projects by OMA and Theaster Gates.
